Hudson River Private School

The Hudson River Hospital for the Insane was built in 1868 and was the leader in the treatment for the mentally ill at the time until its closure in 2007. Since then, this massive Kirkbride building, like so many others of its kind, has been allowed to fall into decay. I propose that the building and its surroundings be saved, renovated, and transformed into the Hudson River Private School. This school will be a top-of-the-line educational facility that caters to both boys and girls, ranging in age from the elementary level through the high school. The main objective of the renovation of the Kirkbride building is to maintain as much of the original structure intact as possible, since this is what makes the style so unmistakable. My ultimate goal is to rescue and to give this historic structure a new lease on life.
What is a Kirkbride Building?
Kirkbride hospitals were a new dawn of mental health, bringing it out of the dark ages. The buildings were used as a cure, soaring ceilings and windows, plenty of natural light and fresh air. Often referred
to as "Bats", the layout included a central
administrative building flanked by staggered wings, females on one side, males on the other. These buildings gave patients the treatment and tranquility to recover and rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, as theories changed and treatments shifted towards the use of medications, these hospitals started to close one by one then decay. Out of the 300 Kirkbrides that were built, less than 20 still stand.
